The team and I were ready for the
first baseball game of the season. It was a cool windy night. We all were so
excited to finally get into the game we love. Our first game was away playing
the Franklin County Eagles. As we got off the bus we stretched, threw a couple
balls, and ran back and forth to get our bodies ready.
First, as the first player gets up to
bat for the eagles, I was in center field. I could feel the excitement. I was
jittery in my legs and I could hear the sound of the fans cheering. It was as
loud as a tornado. I got into my ready position. The player hits it into left
center field and I dive for the ball it was like a hammer coming down on me. And
unfortunately broke my hand on the 1st play of the game. One of the
players came over and said “hey, are you ok?” at first I thought it wasn’t as
bad. “I was fine”, I said. I looked at my hand and right as I did, I knew it
wasn’t good. After our game I went to the hospital to check on my hand to see
if it is broken or not. The doctor called me into this very large room. He said “please sit down and put your hand
down on this table”. When everything was all done and clear I went back into
the waiting room to get my cast, and said that it would take 6 weeks to fully
heel. I was extremely disappointed, because that was almost half of my season
gone away.
However, one
of the reasons I still remember this moment is probably because it was the 1st
game and I couldn’t play the next seven games, and I was eager to get back onto
the field.
Finally, we
had a game the day I got my cast off, at first I felt uncomfortable and
couldn’t really move my hand, but over the time it got a lot better, and I was
so excited to be back. Of course it was against the same team, and I was the lead
off. I felt nervous, I could see where I wanted to hit the first ball. I got a
double by hitting it over the 2ed baseman’s head it and felt amazing. It felt
like I hit the ball a million yards away. I ended up being three for four that
day and we won 8-3. It was a great day.
Great story! Way to come back from an injury with confidence and end up doing good at the end of the season.
