Rebecca Pruitt

A couple of months ago my friend, Ariana, invited me to join her band. She said, “I’ve always wanted to make a band, but I could never find people to be in it.” I told her that I would have to think about it and talk to my parents about it. After I talked to my parents they said that it would be fine as long as I get my school work done. At this point there was only three people in the band, Ariana, McKenzie, and me.
Ariana wanted me to help her find more people to be in the band. We needed a bass player and a pianist, so I went around asking people I knew if they would like to be in a band. Finally, I found a pianist to play for us. Lydia Harner agreed to be in the band with us. Now all we needed was a bass player, and I only knew one person who played bass. I ran down the hall like a monkey on steroids and hugged Brian asking if he would join the band. Right at that moment he said yes.
The time came to have our first practice. All of us, except McKenzie because she had a doctor’s appointment, went to Ariana’s house to come up with a band name. We came up with some really weird names like “Ultimate White Girl + Brian”, “Taco Bell”, and “The Bigfoots.” After spending an hour of thinking of names we finally came up with “Harmony Before 5.” Since we had our name, and our brains were fried, we decided to just hang out for the rest of the time. By the end of our first practice we managed to eat two packs of cookies, a bag of chips, and drink 12 cans of soda. All of us were pigs at the end.
When I saw Ariana the next day we talked about either moving my drum set to her house or renting a set for now. The next week we had our second practice. We only had three of our members there. We didn’t really do much that practice. Lydia worked on one of the songs, and Ariana and I just looked around for sheet music. It got to the point where we didn’t have anything to do, so for some reason, we decided to dance like fools. Lydia and I danced around the poles and Ariana looked at us like we were crazy, which we are.
We haven’t had practice in a while. Ariana got sick, and our schedules don’t always work out. With all of us being freshmen, it’s hard trying to make this work. I still have to set up my drum set which weighs a ton. We haven’t worked on any songs yet, and Kenzie can’t come to practices yet because she is still grounded. We never realized how much money, effort, and time goes into this band, but in the end it’ll be worth the wait.
