I love walking onto the field for the
first football practice in august. It not only excites me, it also makes me
think about my goals and expectations for the upcoming season. I had goals this
year and I made them happen; to start on both sides of the ball. Being able to
complete a long term or a short term goal not only gives you hope but it makes
things a little bit easier. I had goals for myself in middle school my eighth
grade year to get pulled up to play for junior varsity and it happened. Most
people that aren’t too serious about their sports and seasons ahead of them
just walk onto the field and go through the motions just to get through another
practice.
The people that go through the
motions and get through practice without trying to improve tend to stay out of
the game and not play when that time comes around. Sometimes depending on the
sport I’ll make a sheet with my mid-season goals and when mid-season comes
around if they aren’t complete, I’ll make new goals and hope to have them
complete by the end of the season. The first time walking onto the field it
feels great, but it’s easier said than done. You have to be ready for it
mentally and physically. Anybody can put cleats and pads on and just walk on
the field, but to be successful it helps to be ready before. During the summer
in off season it takes hard work and mental toughness.
If you’re not ready for the first day it’ll
show. Working during the summer to get better when it really counts pays off. I
went to my cousin’s first week of practice over the summer in Kentucky and he
quit after I left. He called me and told me he quit two days after I was gone.
He said he didn’t want to play because he wasn’t ready for it. Not everybody is
the “sport type”. I used to not be the type. I also used to be completely lazy
and not dedicated to anything, but after my first year of high school football
I started to think more about how hard I want to try and succeed in my future
years playing football for this high school.
The most
exciting and loving thing about playing football is the dedication and bond you
make with your team. Some people think football is just another sport you play,
and to some people that’s right. But if you put everything into it a game,
isn’t just a game. It’s much more
than that. Winning a mid-season good win makes you realize the first day
walking onto the field will help in the long run. Although our team didn’t make
it too far this season, look the Salem Spartans are going to a state game this
weekend. That’s an example of how hard work pays off.
In
conclusion, I believe walking onto the field and practicing for the first time
of the season really tells how your season’s going to play out. Also it is a
big experience for some people. For some, it’s their first time walking onto
the field. For some and their sanity their favorite place to be. All in all I
love walking onto the field for the season opening practice. It’s almost my
favorite time of year.
