The Sound of Chewing by Julia Nelson

My biggest pet peeve is people that chew loudly on what they are eating when they are near me. Many people are known to do this particular action of chewing loudly on their food. This common action usually occurs in any place that contain food. The sound of people loudly gnawing on their food drives me crazy because I find the sound of this the most annoying sound in the world. Although this is a common pet peeve with many people, I do not think it could possibly ever bother anyone else as much as it bothers me.

During meals whether it is breakfast, lunch, or dinner when I am associating with people there are always a ton of people that chew on their food loudly. I often find it extremely hard to not concentrate on the sound of people eating because it’s like it’s the only sound that you can hear wherever you are. I find it to be a lot more irritating when people are not only chewing loudly, but also the sight of them chewing with their mouth open. The final thing that gets on my nerves when people eat loudly is when they are really close to you chewing loudly on their food so it makes it a million times louder.

Not only is it extremely annoying, it can also be frustrating at the same time. It can be frustrating in a way because there is not much you can really do in the situation. Implying that they are being loud would work if there easy to catch the hint which in most cases, people do not realize it unless you tell them that. If in which case, they do not catch the hint you are sending them, then its best to just move on and try hardest to not concentrate on it and completely ignore it no matter how hard it might be to just ignore it. This is the best way to react in a case like that because otherwise just saying something about it might be rude and hurt their feelings.

Unlike pet peeves such as phrases, saying, or a certain type of action that is popular and meant to be spread around, this pet peeve did not just originate from somewhere specific. This pet peeve is just a natural habit of others that do it but just don’t really think about it. It is definitely not something that was purposely done because others thought the idea or concept is cool. In fact, it is commonly considered annoying to not just me, but many other people that also get annoyed by this certain action.

Implying is definitely the best way to handle the situation if you get very irritated by the sound of chewing. Implying it lets you avoid being so direct with the person who is annoying you. The reason you do not want to be so direct about it is because being direct can make others think that they just annoy you. Implying is the overall better thing to do in any situation where a person is bothering you because most times people understand and don’t get offended by it because it is a lot more respectful to be less direct about something in particular. In the certain situation of somebody eating loudly, you could imply that they are doing so by simply kind of casually making your distance away from them.
